Crew Cut: Gearing Up for the Future and Paying Tribute to the Past - Plus an Emblem Auteur and More

ANTICIPATORY GTAV CREWS

We haven't detailed the features of Grand Theft Auto V's online mode as yet (stay tuned for first info soon), but there's already a whole slew of Crews rallying, preparing and raring to go - with some creating some pretty impressive emblems along the way inspired by the artwork and information we've revealed about the game thus far. In today's edition of the Crew Cut, we take a look at early field of GTAV Crews out there preparing for West Coast domination later this year.

Established nearly a year ago when we first rolled out the Crews system, The GTA V FIVE Crew (GTAV) are one of the longest-running and also the highest-achieving with the most wins we've seen out the V Crews carrying 327 total and a win percentage of 60% throughout all their bouts playing Max Payne 3. needyday31468 is the star of this PS3 Crew with 3,955,250 XP, livelyweek95346 is in second with 3,893,778 and lumpy80011 has 2,475,585 XP. Over the last month, they've had a tight Feud with The YRA Crew (featured in our last edition), winning three Feuds a-piece while just edging them out with 38 kills to 37. Just a one digit differential, but enough to tip the scales in GTA V FIVE Crew's favor.

The April Rockstar Multiplayer Event: Recap with Fan Videos, Prize Winners and More

The April Rockstar Social Club Multiplayer Event was an all-new epic live-streaming edition hosting a six-hour Saturday marathon session on April 13th. Along with action-packed multiplayer across such Social Club Event staples as Grand Theft Auto IV, Max Payne 3, and Red Dead Redemption, we also pulled the tarp off our muscle cars and dusted off the old ping pong paddles for a nostalgic go of Midnight Club: Los Angeles and Table Tennis with Social Club fans. You guys certainly seemed happy to see these old friends on the stream. For those who may have missed out or are ready for more - we'll be looking to do it again this month, stay tuned for news soon on the May edition.

The first port of call was Max Payne 3 for a round of Run and Stun in Branco Headquarters - part of an eclectic playlist that featured some of the more recent DLC game modes and introduced Last Man Standing and Team Last Man Standing game variants, which some of you may remember as featured modes from previous events. In one match, our PlayRockstar2 fought hard on Xbox 360 but couldn't quite stay in check with MARK ALAN DARK, who edged out Wicked9Klown 55 Points to 49. Those two would continue to be a thorn in PlayRockstar2's side, both wielding the IA2 AR assault rifle with surgical precision.

Meanwhile, PlayRockstar was knee-deep in a Team Deathmatch in Nova Esperança on PS3. Opting for a heavy Loadout with the M4, dual 9mm and Weapon Double-Dealer, our Dev went up against ToniMessia, Mike921, hajisaito-san and Blitzard219 of the Shine Thugz Crew (whose stunning Parisian pride Emblem we featured a while back in The Crew Cut). PlayRockstar fought a hard match but the Shine Thugz gang French fried us in the end, winning 78-44.

Over on PC, PlayRockstarPC and porosenok85 went right down to the wire in a thrilling match of Run and Stun - the mode where one player assumes the role of the villainous troll Saci and the rest try to survive his onslaught. Playing as Saci ourselves, we were leading with three minutes to go, looking good, in control and poised to take the win. However, when Wizard88 picked up a kill with the PT92, it opened the gate for porosenok85 to embark on a last-ditch rampage and pip our player to the post 322-268.

PlayRockstar didn't stand a chance against the sting of illyaillya's stun gun.

For the second segment of the event, PlayRockstar2 stepped up to Table Tennis on Xbox 360 while PlayRockstar took to the streets of Midnight Club: Los Angeles. With only a paddle and a point to prove, PlayRockstar2 went on a metronomic rampage, slicing and smashing towards consecutive wins against sirwaltjabasco and VineWooD_HD, giving up a mere three points along the way. With the move to Ranked mode, our Dev ran up against a veritable boss in BL4CKJOK3R. Playing as the Solayman character and wielding levels of spin that might make Congressman Stubbs proud, BL4CKJOK3R beat us in straight sets, only dropping a single point in the process. Kudos.

On the streets of L.A., PlayRockstar buckled up and into an ’88 VW Scirocco and lined up against a stacked field of hungry competitors. Despite bringing a knife to a gunfight as we faced off against some high-octane Lambos in our humble hatchback, PlayRockstar came in a respectable seventh, with MDK_SaCk_LuNcH (XBL GT), MRWAFFELHATER_2 (XBL GT) and xXxPR3D4T0RIxXx (XBL GT) taking first, second and third respectively.

Next, we traded in our German import for an American Standardbred as we switched over to Red Dead Redemption on both Xbox 360 and PS3. PlayRockstar2 kicked things off with a round of Grab the Bag alongside - among others - Newswire regular illyaillya, who managed their team's only capture. The stars of this particular show were xGBUx27Xanax, with a very impressive three captures; and BradPitt_v2v (XBL GT), who clocked up 19 kills - nine of which were headshots. Not to be outdone, our PlayRockstar2 was Top Player in the following round with 13 kills and two captures of their own.

CommanderCaZa also encountered PlayRockstar2 in a ruthless kind of mood during the course of the event, and uploaded the footage to YouTube for everyone to enjoy:

We closed out the day's extravaganza in Liberty City, starting with a GTA Race at the start of Bawhan Dash alongside Dazed_Mong, BALISTIK_BLAZE (XBL GT), shot_yr_melon (XBL GT) and others, quickly battling for the lead with IMdeNMEofDEATH (XBL GT). Things were looking good for us until an errant lamppost nudged our Comet into a spin. We fought back with offensive driving and machine gun fire, and almost pulled back into contention, before running into Dazed_Mong's (XBL GT) roadblock. With dreams of victory shattered after taking a bullet to the head, we had to settle for the ignominy of chasing down the finish line on a Faggio.

Crew Cut: The Feuds Edition

As we approach the one year anniversary of Max Payne 3's release, the competitive landscape of multiplayer continues to be a breeding ground for battles between Social Club Crews. In addition to scheduled matches, one of the ways rival factions can settle their differences is via Feuds, which are automatically triggered during skirmishes and give bonus XP to the first Crew to notch kills on their opponents.

Going by total Feuds in March, the beefiest of the beefers on Xbox LIVE were the Consumer Products (OCPC) Crew. Out of 2,559 total Feuds OCPC has 1,412 wins (55%). Over the last month, they’ve Feuded the most with the Eu Soul Brasil e VC (ESBV) Crew. Going all the way back to August, OCPC just can't seem to dominate ESBV though, racking up 135 wins against 217 losses. Their rivalry with KILLER SMOKING ACES (XKSA), which also dates back to last August, is going better with 191 total wins and 78 losses. Speaking of Eau Sou Brasil e VC, this squad ranks second with 2,001 total Feuds, winning 1,238 of them (62%). In addition to their tussles with Consumer Products, ESBV have also been Feuding a lot with the OneEightSeven (X187) Crew, trailing 79-105 over the month of March. In third last month was the LXG Crew (LXGC), winning 840 out 1,773 total Feuds (47%).

 

While not as voluminous as the aforementioned trio, credit must be given to the Fear The Wrath (FAHQ) Crew – who had an astonishing 94%, and The-Agency-xVx (AGNT) Crew – who came in at 63%.   What they lacked in overall volume (FAHQ Feuded just 612 times) they more than made up for in the epicness of their ugly, ugly beef against each other. Over the last month, FAHQ have dominated AGNT 90-14 but their rivalry goes waaay back, as evidenced in this compilation video from February. We love the intensity and passion guys, but your cardiologists might recommend you dial it back just a tad.

 

 

 

 

In the January 29th faceoff with the Team 4Sace Crew things didn’t go quite as smoothly for our group. Once again starting out with some Gang Wars in Nova, vX Demize Xv (XBL ID) immediately gave Dev2 a taste of defeat by owning them 6-1 with their PT92. With Rezurrectionz surviving the most vendettas and having the highest kill streak and xinsaneiakx having the most kills, Team4Sace whipped us 5-0. In a round of Gang Wars at the São Paulo Bus Depot, Rezurrectionz picked right back up where they left off with a 3-0 onslaught on Dev2. Despite MaxPayneDev3 and MaxPayneDev1 stepping up their games considerably, Team4Sace still wound up with a 3-0 shutout. Props also are in order to SHADOWISKANE, who had a particularly strong outing, and all the members of Team 4Sace.

 

 

We tried to pick up the pieces on February 1st when we faced off with The Illuminatti Crew.  Despite a quick double team on -Romulus- by Devs 1 and 4 at the start of Gang Wars, we were no match for their New World Order and lost 50-28. A Round Two Team Deathmatch over at the Bus Depot went even worse – swallick, _Vagg_ and -Romulus- dispatched Dev1 to hell and back a total of 16 times and they just brutalized us 165-111. In Round Three’s Gang Wars at Tietê River Docks, we just were still outmatched by the killer trio of _Vagg_, -Romulus- and Docteur.Stup – but we did manage to win one round before ultimately losing once again 0-3. Was it all a conspiracy? We’ll never know.

 

 

Our Devs started February 2nd’s matchup with The YRA Crew back in Hoboken for some Gang Wars action. Just seconds in, toNy--StArK92 snuck up on Dev1 like a ghost, obliterating them with the sawn off. Throughout the round poor Dev1 got it again and again from the likes of Richocat, yabadaduuuu and Leader BobbyGonda. Eventually, they started teaming up with Dev14 and turned it around, giving us the win in the initial round. Thanks to KingKoshan’s plethora of grenade attacks and handy work by Richocat, their Crew took Round Two's Team Deathmatch 123-94. All tied up at one, Round Three’s make or break Gang Wars contest featured a little more back and forth, but outstanding games by KingKoshan and punkrokmik were just too much for us to handle and the YRA Crew took the overall match 2-1. 

In another nod to our Feud theme, el_serpe of the T Good T Bad T Ugly Crew (TRIO) put together the montage below of some of their guys take on members of the Penguin Protectors Crew (BLIP). Spoiler alert: TRIO performs very well.

Crew Cut: The War Report

At the end of November, a skirmish against Xvx-The-Agency-xVX Crew began with Team Deathmatch in the Bus Depot. The Xvx-The-Agency-xVX Crew employed the ol' ambush strategy from the start, laying in wait for us in the upper floor of the office. When Dev2 got frustrated and went on a solo run, he was quickly blasted away and the Devs succumbed to a five kill deficit from which they never recovered. Angered by being outfoxed, the Devs stuck close together in Hoboken Alleyways for the next Team Deathmatch, moving through the map as a unit, across rooftops and through the buildings and bars. Having dominated the first session, The Agency's ForceableMass met his immovable object in Dev1, and the Devs moved into a six kill lead, taking a Feud in the process. Dev1 dominated from the rooftops with his trusty G9 Commando by picking off targets across the alleyway, but went with the dual Auto 9mms whenever moving inside. With two minutes to go and the scores still tight, both teams went all out in a thrilling finale. It was close, but Xvx-The-Agency-xVX eventually tired and lost by a decisive six kills. 

Next up, Gang Wars. Our Devs took the first round of out and out Warfare comfortably 36-22. Although Xvx-The-Agency-xVX managed to escape with the bags in Grab and bomb the main bridge in Short Fuse, the Rockstar Dev Crew took the checkpoints in Passage which left the playing field even heading into the final Elimination. Xvx-The-Agency-xVX again took up strategic positions, this time in the high part of the Favelas, using cover and height to rain down death. Good work with the RPG from Dev2 helped take out some snipers but the fortress could not be breached. With just four Devs remaining, they ultimately retreated to their own vantage point, fighting fire with fire. However, Xvx-The-Agency-xVX's strategy helped ensure that time was on their side, and eventually the clock ran out on the Devs. Final score 2-1 to Xvx-The-Agency-xVX - huge commendations for the Machiavellian tactics leveraged with a degree of teamwork like we've rarely seen before.

The December Social Club Multiplayer Events Recap

December brought us the final Social Club Multiplayer Events of 2012, capping off an explosive year of Bullet Time laden Gang Wars in São Paulo, free-for-all wild western Shootouts, and of course Free Roaming mayhem across Liberty City and the American frontier. Here’s to our dedicated and awesome Social Club community for all the great times – and to an exciting 2013 as we continue the Winter calendar and gear up for what’s in store this spring…

Over in Coot’s Chapel, Undead Nightmare's High Brains Drifter map was jumping with our monster mash out posse. Dev4 fought the good fight with fellow Social Club zombie hunters, but in the end was killed by the undead and, in a classic case of "I don't know which species is worse", by his own teammate, Rafioso. Et tu, Rafi?

Crew Cut: Season's Beatings

As Old Man Winter tightens his icy grip outside, Social Club Crews have continued to keep warm with regular southbound trips to the hot and hazy multiplayer grottos of São Paulo in Max Multiplayer. To celebrate the season and in the spirit of giving, we've hooked up all members of Social Club with a little stocking stuffer in the form of the awesome new Human Skull, accessible via the Head Items section of your Loadouts. After this past Saturday's Max Payne 3 Social Club Multiplayer Event, we also introduced Event-specific Crew leaderboards for the very first time on the Social Club Multiplayer Events page, alongside our usual individual Player leaderboards. The chance to unlock another skull, the fearsome Wedding Skull, by placing in the top 10 private Crews brought the best of Social Club Crews out in force, with everyone allowed to join in all the games. We'll have more chances to unlock these skulls coming in January. This week on the Crew Cut we take a look at who the winning Crews were in our second Social Club Winter Calendar Event, and which squads are catching our eye for the very first time with performances that left their opponents strung up like fairy lights. We've also rounded up some fine and festive seasonal Crew Emblems we found further below.

DEATH AND MARRIAGE

With the awesome Wedding Skull to fight for, Crews were repping hard to cement their place at the top of the leaderboards. The Ice Cold Assassins Crew impressively snuck into the top 10 private PS3 Crews with just five members. This came as no surprise after the plucky Free Aimers proved themselves admirably in a recent bout against the Rockstar Dev Crew, showing us the speed and accuracy with which they maintain their 90% Feud win percentage. However the most astonishing performance in the entire event was by two-man Crew Black Shadow. This deadly duo worked harder than Saint Nick on Christmas Eve to finish 10th overall on the PC Crew Event leaderboards; respect to leader BermsBertDualShk for also finishing eighth on the PC Player leaderboards.

Black Shadow are just one of a host of Crews who have not yet received the recognition that they clearly deserve here in the Crew Cut report. Two more Crews that have never been featured are Kung Foo Fighters and Dixie Gaming League, coming in 8th and 9th respectively on the Xbox leaderboards during the event. Kung Foo Fighters Crew recently snuck into the top 20 of all Xbox Crews worldwide, and are making a play for the big dogs. Meanwhile the Dixie Gaming League's vocal leader, MONSTRO1988, shouts out his "heritage, not hatred" Crew faithfully here in comments on the Newswire. Monstro is a professed Loadout connoisseur and strong opponent to the current trend towards dual-wielding amongst Max Payne 3 players. The tactic seems to be effective as Monstro himself placed 9th on the individual leaderboards. Solid work, there.

TIS THE SEASON

With Christmas just around the corner, we're pleased to see a few Crews getting in the spirit already with well-placed Santa hats giving a festive feel to some classic Social Club emblems. The YRA and S-13 Brasil are committed not only in their Emblem Editor practice but in their Social Club Events performances as well, with both of them earning their right to sport the Wedding Skulls over the Holiday Season. The YRA Crew's British Bulldog can show off his new mustache proudly after they finished top of the PS3 private Crews during the Event. Meanwhile, the S-13Brasil Crew's emblem cries reddened tears for the fallen, but the 2,465 Kills they racked up during the event proves every word of their cerebral motto: "Nenhum obstaculo e tao grande se sua vontade de vencer for maior" ("No obstacle is too great, if the desire to win is greater"). 

We leave you this week with an awesome rendition of the GTAV "Beach Weather" girl by ErnestoRock2 given a suitable Christmas twist by Sweeeet55 for Consumer Products Crew. Not only do they have a sweet emblem, but as the only Crew on Xbox to beat the 121,000 strong hordes of the Payne Killers Crew members, Consumer Products were top of the tree on the Xbox Event leaderboards. With well over 4,100 Feuds won, it should come as no surprise. Sons of GTA didn't make it onto any of the Event leaderboards, but we must give respect for the holiday-themed version of their emblem featuring the men of GTAs past. You'll have to make room for three more in there next year, lads!

Recapping the November Social Club Multiplayer Events with Fan Videos & More

Social Club stalwart and Video Editor all-star FugetSudo created this pretty awesome video of Niko Bellic himself getting in on the November 29th GTAIV PC event fun live from Tw@ cafe.

Thanks to Social Club members worldwide for joining us last month for a stacked set of Multiplayer Events battles across Max Payne 3, Red Dead Redemption and GTAIV - and those we've seen continuing to fight the fight in the current Winter events calendar with action unfolding well into the New Year. We'll have a December recap soon looking at all of the most recent action including the skulls holiday unlock Max Payne 3 extravaganza that happened this past weekend.

The final month of the Fall Calendar kicked off with November 16th’s intense 6-hour doubleheader of Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3. Our two live-streaming players, RedDeadDev3 and RedDeadDev4, started with a Gang Shootout in which Dev4 took out 3 opponents in the opening duel and then raced to 13 kills for only 6 deaths. However, the opposition clung on thanks to solid work from KALD_KSA_F-15 (PSN ID) and mad2oo8m (PSN ID), leaving only $50 in it with three minutes to go. Dev4's teammate justaway56 (PSN ID) came to life here with a series of quick fire kills to claim the win for Dutch's Gang and come away as top player with 19 kills notched.

Following a spontaneous mass brawl in Free Roam, Dev3 entered a Grand Prix in Carrera Del Diablo with DemonLord B7R, Mazzkulin, AkA x MaFiAzZ, ClaudeSpd, ListeKing, StrappedRuby303 and Samuel4000. Dev3 saw an early lead diminish as weapons went live and DemonLord BR7 immediately put his horse down. It was an uphill struggle from there but our dev almost pulled it back, clinching second going into Chuparosa but ultimately falling just behind the race winner, Mazzkulin. Dev3 fought valiantly in the next two races and was in prime position going into the final race, but wound up falling to a 5th place finish - credit to Mazzkulin. for the overall win.

After two hours of Dead Eye shootouts and dusty horseback sprints, Dev4 retired to the seemingly more tranquil reaches of the card table for an alfresco poker game with The RogeR 1980, CrochingPanda, KDawg50, LegiosSuperOdin (XBL GT) and Too Slow 2 Know (XBL GT). Meanwhile, Dev3 was engaging in a round of Liar's Dice. With rest and recreation both done, Dev4 then braved the Undead Overrun with Karman1908, URAskumk (XBL GT) and MAXIMUN STRESS (XBL GT), while Dev3 was capturing bags in Armadillo. Cheers to everyone who joined us for that front nine on Red Dead, especially those hardcore souls who then stuck around for the Max Payne 3 session that followed straight after...

... MaxPayneDev1 headed into the 2nd half of the double-header in Max Payne 3 Multiplayer on XBL via a baptism of bullets, beginning the event with a Free Aim Gang War in the Docks. Dev1 immediately came face to face with members of some of our most fearsome Free Aim Crews around, including representatives from We Own The Night and the U Got Smacked Clan. Also good to see BrokenWhiskeyBottles rocking their Founder Crew Day Of The Dead Skulls earned at the Halloween event a few weeks prior. With support from Demize505 (XBL GT), Dev1 was able to win a game of assassination for the Comando Sombra, taking out Bl4zin Am4zin using a grenade to stun, before storming into the hideaway with the G6 Commando. Despite rushing a primed bomb site alongside Makaveli and WolfskinKiller, Dev1 was unable to defuse the bomb before Bl4zin Am4zin could get to him. Tropa Z took the round, and eventually the War.

In the closing stages, our MaxPayneDev1 and Dev2 found themselves thrown together in a game of Gang Wars, playing as the Comando Sombra against the UFE. Fighting alongside them were members of xVx-The-Agency-xVx - a good opportunity to school up on their play styles before our Private Throwdown, which streamed on the Rockstar Games Twitch.tv page a couple weeks later on November 30th. The two Crews went at it in a quick opening round of Elimination but, spawning within a grenade's throw of each other, the round was over quickly - and messily. Dev1 lasted just a few seconds before being picked off by the IA2 AR of seb thc, who went on to score the final kill for his team. Dev1 quickly got revenge in the next round however, picking off seb thc with dual Auto 9mms beneath the bridge in the center of the Favela. The Dev's team took a comfortable lead but, as things turned bloody in the Warehouse where the sole checkpoint was positioned, the UFE clawed back into contention. With help from Dev1's impressive eight kill streak (the highest in the entire War), the Comando Sombra were able to recapture the checkpoint and take the round. From this point on, it was one-way traffic, with the Comando Sombra ending the final Elimination with 15 respawns to spare.

On PSN, Dev3 was glad to get some game time in with longtime fan Transporter-K96 and saw a lot of unfamiliar PSN Crews getting down and dirty, including Kansas City Shufflers, Pain Crew and Dusky German Elite. Respect to Liquid_Snake518 and Zedd.. of Comando Do Elite Crew who finished 1 and 2 in a Deathmatch against Dev3. We also enjoyed the sarcastic commentary of hippybojangles and the Gallic enthusiasm of Corgijulien. Other notable players on the day included little_jacob, xo-_GaMeOveR_-xo, , brriiiiaan, Kauffmann, sayhitoyourmom, and drewhagan. Finally, a huge shout-out to Hot_kimera, go4live and jbxjurassic for topping the event leaderboards - don't miss the list of all our event participants at the bottom of the page.

The fall season of events deserved a thrilling finale and we weren't disappointed by the three hours spent in the company of the gun-toting residents of Liberty City on November 29th. First up, our dev player PlayRockstar joined  SlayNasty and Ray27 for a game of Cops and Crooks on PSN. On the way to the getaway vehicle, PlayRockstar spotted an RPG and a SuperGT sports car sitting on opposite sides of the street. Sensing an opportunity, we took a quick exit from the car to pick up this manna from heaven. Shortly after, Brenosa (PSN ID) and Ak-41 (PSN ID), playing on the side of the cops, came screaming around the corner with sirens wailing, but Dev1 was ready to light a fire beneath them, and make a quick escape in the SuperGT. Once at the docks, our PlayRockstar hooked back up with SlayNasty to take to the skies of Liberty City in a Maverick helicopter and escape the clutches of the LCPD.

Later, in a three-way Team Deathmatch with SMGs, FuLR3c0rS_GB (PSN ID) was able to take out PlayRockstar three times in quick succession to start off the game. This was the first of a series of awesome kill streaks that took FuLR3c0rS_GB straight to the top of the leaderboard. PlayRockstar rallied with a stoic performance, tracking FuLR3c0rS_GB at every turn with more than one face-off resulting in a double KO. Assistance from teammate KillaQuan82 (PSN ID) couldn't help PlayRockstar, and FuLR3c0rS_GB took the win with a superhuman 39 kills for just 9 deaths.

On Xbox LIVE, our GwRockstar3 went out hard against the bloodthirsty masses and a helicopter race around the islands had carnage written all over it. What could have been a serene flight around the bay to check out the sights of Liberty City turned into a dogfight of death as players struggled with the uncompromising controls and the whirling blades of their opponents’ choppers. After flying too high over the very first checkpoint, we had to double back, immediately falling behind the pack (a position from which GwRockstar3 would never recover). Although Slackumm (XBL GT) was the first casualty, GeeLockOTA (XBL GT) later sideswiped us in the airspace above Funland and sent GwRockstar crashing to earth. While GwRockstar recovered, OvErDoSe661 and illyaillya jostled for the lead on the other side of the island. illyaillya finished first, while GwRockstar was still halfway through lap 2. Congratulations on the strong win.

In the second hour of the event, our GwRockstar3 began a nitro-powered joyride through the streets of Star Junction in supercars. Despite the performance vehicle’s delicate handling requiring a masterful conductor, a confident GwRockstar3 opted for the Bullet GT. After a tire blowout within the first minute, GwRockstar3 was forced to take the slower and steadier Tampa, made slower still when its tires also blew out less than a minute later. Fried alive inside, our GwRockstar3 sensed the day was not his and stuck with the humbling Faggio scooter to take on the Banshees and Infernuses and see out the rest of the race. Our Dev stood no chance, crawling over the finish line in an uninspired 7th. Well done IITONYSOPRANOII for prevailing and taking the checkered flag.
