Recap from the Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition Social Club Multiplayer Event on PSN (April 5)

GTA fans from around the globe joined in for the April 5th Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition Social Club multiplayer event on PSN - tearing up Liberty City online, watching the video stream and entering the sweeps to win coveted prizes.

The hundreds in Social Club chat witnessed lots of action via the session's live broadcast - with players in multiplayer modes from the original GTAIV, The Lost and Damned as well as The Ballad of Gay Tony. Thanks to all who joined us for some pretty awesome TDM, GTA Race and of course fan-favorite Cops n’ Crooks (special shout to Flight666, PlayRockstar10 and Dinobrunio for a particularly memorable car-flipping, and epic shootouts bit of C&C).

Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition Official Social Club Multiplayer Event on PSN (April 5, 4-7PM Eastern)

The Spring calendar of Social Club multiplayer events heats up this month with a double dose for PSN, beginning Thursday April 5th with an afternoon of Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition from 4-7PM Eastern, and continuing in two weeks on Friday April 20th with Red Dead Redemption: Game of the Year Edition in the same time slot.

Hope to see everyone on both days, but first things first: the GTAIV event. We'll have a live video stream on the multiplayer events page, and you can also join in the chat and enter to win one of 20 prize packs. Winners will receive a t-shirt, GTAIV license plate and a bunch of stickers – all delivered to your doorstep.

We'll begin the event in GTAIV and later switch over to The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, about an hour for each. We recommend staying in the chatroom on the multiplayer events page while playing so you'll be able to let us know your IDs. Any version of GTAIV or the episodes will be compatible with us, so don't worry if you don't own the Complete Edition. PlayRockstar12 will be in original Grand Theft Auto IV multiplayer for the entire event for those that don't have the episodes.

Where's Rockstar? Pay attention to the live chat on the Social Club Multiplayer Events page. We'll announce where we're at in there. We'll begin in Grand Theft Auto IV in GTA Race, and later progress to the two episodes. Use the in-game cellphone to select the mode we're playing during the event.

For team-based modes such as Team Deathmatch, gather your friends using Party Mode. You can also hit up the chat during the event or just post your PlayStation Network ID in the Comments section below.

ABOUT PARTY MODE
Party Mode is an easy way to get your group together and find matches.  Here are the three quick and easy steps to get you up and running:

1. Save your current game. To get started, fire up the in-game mobile phone by pressing "Up" on the keyboard. Select Multiplayer > Party Mode > Yes.
2. Next, open up your phone again and select the Friends option to invite at least one person into your Party Mode game.
3. Once your team is ready to roll, open up the in-game phone again and select Games > GTA Race.

Announcing the Spring 2012 Official Social Club Multiplayer Events Calendar - Including the First Max Payne 3 Multiplayer Dates

Presenting the spring 2012 calendar in our long-running Social Club multiplayer events series of live streaming action where you get to play with and against us online - and including dates for the very first of many Max Payne 3 multiplayer dates that will begin in full force following the game's release this May. We'll have developers from Rockstar studios worldwide jumping online in those sessions to celebrate and go all out with some Gang Wars, Payne Killer and more - of course, stay tuned for lots more details about the Max Payne 3 multiplayer experience in the coming weeks and months.

We'll also have more details about some new special features being added to the Events themselves in time for Max Payne 3's release - along with our traditional live video stream, live Social Club chat with Rockstar, and prize package giveaways that all happen at the Social Club official multiplayer events page.

On top of the live streaming dates listed in the calendar, you can also expect to see us playing Max Payne 3 online in sessions every single day in May beginning May 15th - we'll be giving a shout exclusively via Twitter and Facebook to let you know when we're powering on our consoles and booting up our PCs to throw down.

And while we're all very excited to kick off the first Max Payne multiplayer events - there'll also be action this spring from Liberty City to Chuparosa with scheduled dates for Red Dead Redemption: Game of the Year Edition (including Undead Nightmare) and Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition (including modes from both Episodes).

To get a good glimpse of the action that took place in last Friday's Grand Theft Auto IV and Episodes from Liberty City PC multiplayer event - check out Social Club member and GTAIV PC Video Editor veteran champ FugetSudo_Jr's superb original video above - put together with footage from the day and using the PC version's Video Editor suite of tools. GTAIV PC Social Club Multiplayer Event on Games for Windows LIVE (February 24, 4-7PM Eastern)

Join in Friday February 24th for an afternoon on the PC with Grand Theft Auto IV and Episodes from Liberty City from 4-7PM Eastern time. We'll be racing and shooting our way through the entire original multiplayer experience and also spend the middle and last hours in The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony.

Everything begins in GTA Race in Grand Theft Auto IV. It's optional but always good to get a Grand Theft Auto party going in Party Mode with some friends. Once you're ready and the event has begun, start up GTA Race. Rockstar players will be scattered through a number of different lobbies to allow for the maximum amount of people to play on each day.

Absolutely. They’re all being implemented now as we speak, using production photos provided by the fans we chose in the #MaxPayne3 casting event on Twitter. We’re excited ourselves to see the finished results and will be sharing a look with you all when they’re ready.

No, it’s not because of shipping, it’s just the way entertainment gets released between the two different territories at retail – in the US, games, music and DVDs come out on Tuesdays and in Europe, on Fridays – so that is how our releases come out. We did, with GTAIV, try a global release – but it was very complicated and created a lot of problems with retail in Europe. We are old enough to remember when there were often months between American and European releases, and believe three days difference is not a huge deal, but we would also just as well prefer it if everywhere was easily set up for releases to be on the same date.

But I would like to know how can this happen if the game is set in São Paulo and BOPE is from Rio de Janeiro.

No actually, the special police force in the game is the fictionalized UFE (Unidade de Forças Especiais) which are inspired by many of the real-life units mentioned in our first Max Payne 3 Research article – such as the GATE, GARRA, and GOE of São Paulo.

The Max Payne series was built on its precise and fluid shooting mechanics, and a huge amount of work has been put into ensuring Max's aiming and weapon balance systems not only live up to the reputation of the original but also try to maximize what is possible with modern third and first-person shooters, enabling us to deliver fluid free-aim mechanics on both PC and console. We want lovers of the series to be able to dive right into free aim, but we also want to provide a range of aiming options and difficulty levels for players of all skill levels, so you'll find a range of aiming options available whether you're a hardcore shooter player or a newcomer to the series.

Max Payne’s multiplayer is all about taking the physicality and tech of Max’s movement and shooting abilities and translating that directly into multiplayer in a way that fits with the overall story and the themes of the game, so getting Bullet Time right in the multiplayer experience is a huge priority. Bullet Time in multiplayer works via line of sight rather than applying to the whole level, or to a bubble around the player. While Bullet Time is Max’s special ability, it is just one of a range of special abilities  - called Bursts – that you’ll find in multiplayer. Each Burst plays on an aspect of Max Payne 3’s overall themes such as conspiracy, paranoia, heroism, betrayal – and all come into play in our new narrative-based gameplay mode, Gang Wars. As you play through the story of Max Payne 3, each outfit is contextual to the narrative of what is happening at that level. For example, in the office level, Max is wearing that grey suit as he has a meeting with his new employer, Rodrigo Branco (apparently a quite eventful meeting at that).
As for the Weapon wheel, Max can carry three weapons at all times – two smaller one-handed weapons (like handguns and small automatics) and one larger two-handed weapon (such as an automatic rifle). The Weapon wheel allows you to quickly select between these three weapons. It also allows you to choose to dual wield the two single-handed weapons.


"I'm a big Grand Theft Auto fan, and have extensively played and loved every game in the series, and upon research I came across screenshots and other information about the beta version of GTA III that was given to game testers, and some of the beta cars and features that were removed. One important thing we should clarify is that the early work-in-progress version of Grand Theft Auto III you’re referring to was not a proper ‘beta’ but an early pre-alpha build that was far from complete or really functional. While it would be a fun thing in theory to be able to pull up and play it to check it out, unfortunately it’s technically not possible. Thank you though for reaching out, it’s certainly been a lot of fun revisiting the days of GTAIII’s development with our long-time fans recently (make sure to check out our 2-part series of fan questions answered about Grand Theft Auto III here).

As we revealed in our announcement about the game being officially in full development, Grand Theft Auto V is set in the city of Los Santos and its surrounding hills, countryside and beaches – and it will be the largest and most ambitious open world game we’ve ever created…


“Hello, I just purchased L.A. Noire and the extension for GTA (PS3) that includes The Ballad of Gay Tony. Firstly, I must say both are impressive games. L.A. Noire in particular is a work of art. Frankly I'm shocked that any video game company is producing something of this caliber and depth when it would seem that the market tends to reward video game makers for making fluff. One thing that rubbed me just slightly the wrong way was the manner in which the topic of homosexuality was handled in The Ballad of Gay Tony. Make no mistake here, I was not offended by the portrayal of a stereotype - I would be quite the hypocrite to be playing GTA and offended by a social commentary hitting too close to home. Rather I was shocked by something much more subtle: the fact that the main character was unable to dance with the men in the gay bars. GTA allows the player to sleep with and murder hookers, but disallows dancing between two men. This seems to have been an intentional choice on the part of the creators of the game and begs the question: why not?" – received via Mouthoff

Thanks for the feedback. We are pretty confident that Luis can dance with a guy in Hercules. You have to dance well with a girl first, then a guy will come and challenge you, as a way of seeing who is the better dancer. Luis is a heterosexual character. Tony is a gay character. They are best friends and work together. Luis is a vain, psychotic, deluded and somewhat confused mess, but he is not remotely homophobic, nor is he remotely bi-sexual. So he dances with women, but he is comfortable helping to run a gay night club. With all our open world games, we try to provide a range of experiences that fit the character and help develop the character while providing a good range of things to do. So Niko didn’t dance at all, but Luis did, and Jimmy (from Bully) can kiss people but not shoot them, like a normal school boy. Meanwhile, in Red Dead Redemption, John Marston won’t cheat on his wife, or dance, but is happy slaughtering any number of animals.

While there won’t be any more DLC or additional content for the current release of L.A. Noire (we’re all too busy working on Max Payne 3, GTAV and other games to come), don’t count out the possibility of a new game in the L.A. Noire franchise in the future. We simply have not decided anything. We’re all very pleased with how that game turned out and are considering what the future may hold for L.A. Noire as a series. We don’t always rush to make sequels, but that does not mean we won’t get to them eventually – see Max and Red Dead for evidence of that – we have so many games we want to make and the issue is always one of bandwidth and timing.

With multiplayer mode action spanning the original Grand Theft Auto IV through both Episodes from Liberty City, and with everything from Deathmatch to GTA Races to Free Roam BASE jumping mayhem - this one was an epic international affair. Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition Official Social Club Multiplayer Event on Xbox LIVE (January 26, 5-8 PM Eastern)

Update: The multiplayer event and sweepstakes have ended. Thanks to everyone that joined us, whether you were playing, watching, chatting or just stopping by to enter the sweepstakes.

We've got 20 prize packs to give away Thursday January 26th in the Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition Social Club multiplayer event on Xbox LIVE, running from 5-8PM Eastern.

To enter the sweepstakes, head over to the multiplayer events page and scroll down to 'Sweepstakes Entry'. Submit your details and you're all set. Winners will be randomly selected and contacted the next day. Prize packs include a shirt, foam hand, pin set, license plate, Grand Theft Auto IV stickers and Rockstar stickers.

We'll begin the event in Grand Theft Auto IV and later switch over to The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, about an hour for each. Keep up with the modes we're playing in the chat while watching the live video stream. You'll be able to play with us no matter what version of the game or episodes you use. GwRockstar6 will be in original Grand Theft Auto IV multiplayer for the entire event for those that don't have the episodes.

HOW TO FIND US
Again, we'll begin the event in original Grand Theft Auto IV multiplayer. To join, start the in-game Party Mode using the cellphone. Make sure that your in-game Party Mode team size is at least two people. Once ready, head to the chat to find out the mode we're beginning with, and type your Gamertag into the chat. Another way is just to send over a friend request to the Gamertags above. We'll do our best to get you in for a few rounds. More info on using Party Mode is listed below.

ABOUT PARTY MODE
Grand Theft Auto IV's in-game Party Mode is an easy way to get your group together and find matches. Here are the three quick and easy steps to get you up and running:

1. Save your current game. To get started, fire up the in-game mobile phone by pressing "Up" on the D-pad.  Select Multiplayer > Party Mode > Yes.
2. From here, open up your phone again and select the Friends option to invite your friends (you need at least one friend to play with Rockstar). 
3. Once your team is ready to roll, open up the in-game phone again and select Ranked > Team Deathmatch for this event. Follow us in the chat to find out the modes we're playing.

SPECTATE AND CHAT
Can't jump in and play? As we stated above you can still follow the event at the multiplayer events page. We'll have a live streaming video broadcast of the in-game matches plus a chat box so you can discuss the stream with others. Look below for specific directions you can follow to get online, grab a partner, and jump into the fray.

We will be giving instructions and updates in the chat box as the afternoon rolls on. Get ready...
