Rockstar Covers Esquire Magazine's 20th Anniversary 'Man At His Best' Issue

For their 20th anniversary, renowned UK men's magazine, Esquire reached out to 20 creators that they felt represented the theme of 'Man At His Best,' and asked them to design a unique version of the Esquire cover for that issue. Rockstar Games had the honor of being selected alongside such esteemed company as comedian and Grand Theft Auto IV alumni Ricky Gervais, drum'n'bass legend Goldie, Saville Row tailor Richard James among others. Our cover art, designed to reflect the decay that exists alongside all things beautiful, definitely warrants close inspection - not only is it a little creepier than it appears at first glance, but you might see a few things you recognize from our games across the years. Check Esquire's write-up on Rockstar Games, alongside the full range of 'Man At His Best' covers on the Esquire UK website here: http://www.esquire.co.uk/category/design-technology/design/20th-anniversary-special/

"Facing the Future" - Games TM UK Digs into L.A. Noire

A latest look at L.A. Noire comes from issue 104 of the British magazine Games TM, who traveled to Los Angeles to get a taste of the game, a glimpse of the Depth Analysis studio responsible for the incredible MotionScan technology, and to sit down with members of team behind the game including Team Bondi's Brendan McNamara and Rockstar's Jeronimo Barrera. Here's a bit of what they had to say in the feature on newsstands now throughout the UK:

"...our conversation with the b-movie actress turns to an interrogation, and we lose interest in philosophising altogether. She just will not co-operate. It's obvious she knows more than she's letting on, and not just from the fact her story has more holes than the proverbial swiss cheese. No, it's obvious because we see it in her inability to make eye contact. Or the way she's shifting from side to side or as her mouth curls up in some form of abject hatred as she hints at a feud between her dodgy husband and a local movie producer. We're used to videogame characters becoming angry, but we're not so much used to joining them... At this point we realise two important facts: the first is that Rockstar has clearly realised the power of its MotionScan technology, and the second is that L.A. Noire is drawing us in hook, line and sinker."

“Opens Up Whole New Avenues in the Medium” – The Daily Telegraph and Gizmodo Talk L.A. Noire Tech

The MotionScan technology behind LA Noire’s hyper-realistic faces is as much a marvel of technological process as it is impeccable design. Recently, several journalists worldwide had the opportunity to visit the studio of Depth Analysis, the sister company to Team Bondi and the creators of the MotionScan technology. To compliment the release of last week's video, "The Technology Behind Performance", The Daily Telegraph and Gizmodo wrote about their experiences with the technology, and on the process that brings these characters to life. Here are a few choice excerpts:

The woman I’m speaking to is lying. I don’t need to listen to what she’s saying; I can tell from her body language that she is unnerved by my questions. Her body is slightly turned away from me, her arms are folded and she is nervously chewing her bottom lip. Most telling, however, is the look in her eyes and the way that she refuses to make eye contact. The woman I’m referring to, however, isn’t real. She’s a computer generated representation of an actress playing a character in an upcoming video game called L A Noire. The technology being used to display her face captures every detail; every line and every facial tick. Not only is it an incredible piece of work, it has an immersive effect on the player. In no time at all, I’ve begun to think of this collection of pixels as a living, breathing person.”

From the moment Rockstar unveiled their trailer for upcoming detective thriller, L.A. Noire from Aussie developers Team Bondi, we’ve known that the bar for motion capture in video games has not only been raised, but sent through the roof. Animators have been flirting with the edge of the uncanny valley for years, but now using some incredibly intelligent and advanced technology, the guys from Team Bondi have created the 21st century version of Pinocchio, turning digital game characters into realistic, animated people.”
