Max Payne 3 Out Now for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in North America: Available in Europe this Friday, May 18th

Max Payne 3 is now available at retail stores across North America for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The latest in the groundbreaking series known for bringing Bullet Time®, noir atmosphere and Hong Kong action movie aesthetics to video games, Max Payne 3 combines highly sophisticated gunplay and fluid movement with a dark, twisted narrative, and intensely cinematic presentation.

Max Payne 3 picks up the story of fallen former New York City detective Max Payne - several years after the events of the original games. Close to washed up and addicted to painkillers, Max accepts a job offer of private security work in São Paulo, Brazil, protecting wealthy businessman Rodrigo Branco and his beautiful trophy wife Fabiana in the hopes of an escape from his tragic past. When Fabiana is abducted while under Max’s protection, Max finds himself caught up in something much larger than a simple kidnapping, looking for answers on the streets of an unfamiliar city as his personal demons return to haunt him once again.

In a first for the series, Max Payne 3 brings the series’ signature combination of precise shooting, fluid movement and Bullet Time to online multiplayer, with a range of co-operative and competitive modes that allow players to compete in free-for-all matches, fight for the chance to play as Max Payne himself in Payne Killer, or build out events from the single-player story in the dynamically branching Gang Wars mode.

Max Payne 3 is also the first Rockstar title to feature Crews, persistent clans of friends that can play together online, building alliances and rivalries while tracking progress and Crew Feuds through the Social Club. Crews extend across platforms and across game titles, with Crews created within Max Payne 3 ready and available for players in Grand Theft Auto V and other future titles.

Developed across Rockstar Games Studios Worldwide, Max Payne 3 is now available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in North America and coming this Friday, May 18th in Europe. Look for the PC version launching on May 29th in North America and June 1st in Europe as well. The Max Payne 3 Classic Multiplayer Character Pack

Presenting the full line-up of rogues and heroes in the Classic Multiplayer Character Pack available at launch as part of the Max Payne 3 Special Edition (the pack will also be made available for download post-release). This cast of fan-favorite killers from the original Max Payne and Max Payne 2 will be available as playable Deathmatch characters bringing a bit of nostalgia to the Max Payne 3 online experience. Take a look at the full set with introductory musings for each compliments of Max's inner monologue direct from Max Payne and Max Payne 2...

VLADIMIR ‘VLAD’ LEM
"Vladimir Lem.
He was connected to organized crime. We went back a while. 'Like brothers caught on the opposite sides in a Civil War'. His words."

VINCENT ‘VINNIE’ GOGNITTI
"Gognitti was a highstrung whiner on the verge of breaking apart like an overamped Energizer bunny. He had the brains to run the business but he lacked the balls, always falling short, taking his frustration out on under-aged addicts and call girls."

JACK LUPINO
"Jack Lupino, a mob boss in the Punchinello crime family, was trafficking. Lupino ran his racket of sex, drugs and contract killings from a sleazy motel and a slum block of tenements."

ALFRED WODEN
"Woden was there... in the crowd, standing by the sidelines. It wouldn't be over till the man with the patch would say so. He'd say the right words. I knew he would. He'd better."

MONA SAX
"Mona's appearance had triggered a dislocation, schizophrenia. I felt elation, but with it, fear that all the past evils had come along for the ride."

VALERIE WINTERSON
"Winterson was the ideal, what the job was all about. Someone to look up to. Bravura knew it too."

NICOLE HORNE
"I had dreamed of revenge. Those dreams were always nightmares, of coming close and then failing. Now I was close. I had a name to guide me. Nicole Horne. I had nothing to lose."

MAX PAYNE
The eponymous and troubled hero of the series returns in a familiar guise for multiplayer deathmatches - appearing as his character model from years prior as an NYPD detective in Max Payne 2. You'll also be able to get the character model from Max Payne 1 at launch by pre-ordering from Toys R Us and select PC digital retailers or as part of the Rockstar Pass later this summer.

Max Payne fans, which one of these throwback characters from Max's history are you most excited to play as online? Let it be known in the fan poll below.

New Max Payne 3 Hands-On Features from Polygon and CVG

Last week, we invited the guys from Polygon and CVG to experience three of the early levels in Max Payne 3. Here's a small preview from each of these features.

Playing through these levels, CVG remarked that the game is "the perfect marriage of stylish action and hard-boiled noir" and came away summarily impressed at the levels of action, ambience and authenticity:

"In a sequence worthy of a Ringo Lam film, Max hurtles through corridors avoiding sniper fire, cuts through several rooftops while dropping bad guys en route and drops down on a crew of thugs through the roof of a chopshop. The environments he blazes through - the dilapidated apartments, the slush-covered roofs and a booze-slick bar - look disgustingly seedy. It's almost as though someone took the interior of Club Ragnarok from the first Max Payne game, and expanded it to the length of three city blocks."

Read CVG's preview at http://www.computerandvideogames.com/345795/previews/max-payne-3-hands-on-with-the-first-3-hours/

Polygon also came away awestruck at the way "narrative and gunplay wrap so neatly together", not to mention the ways Max Payne 3 looks to redefine the conventions of a 3rd person action shooter:

"Cover, when it's available, is just a place to wait to die. These hiding spots are invariably chewed away by gun shots and almost always give your enemies time to regroup and flank you. The only way to succeed in Max Payne 3 is to scramble and dive, to bullet time and clear a room."

Read Polygon's preview at http://www.theverge.com/gaming/2012/4/30/2981770/true-to-its-roots-max-payne-3-is-at-its-heart-a-game-about-max

Additionally, Max Payne 3 is the focus of Brian Crecente's 'Good Game' column for Polygon. Check out his interview that delves into the narrative aspects of the game and how they shape Max's journey in Max Payne 3:

"'In this game ... we are not tackling the issue of addiction, but we are looking at the character and actions of a man who has problems with substances, but also a lot of other problems," he said. "There is a subtle but important difference. It's a shooter about a drunk, somewhat morose, widowed ex-cop, trying to find some kind of peace with himself. It is not a game about the realities of being a drunk in terms of the need to drink. It is a game about being Max Payne.'

In layering a character study about a man warped by the violence he has both witnessed and inflicted, onto a violent video game, Rockstar has created something surprisingly complex."

From UFE’s Intelligence Files: The Crachá Preto (The Gangs of Max Payne 3)

At the official Max Payne 3 site today, you'll find the latest intelligence dossier documenting one of the game's most notorious forces, the Crachá Preto paramilitary faction of São Paulo. The detailed file on this ruthless vigilante squad reveals that they're far from an amateur band of gunmen - their 400 strong army consists of hardened and highly-trained specialized police, firefighters and even rogue active military men.

Although they claim to be a 'community self-defense force', the report reveals a more sinister side with a history of extortion, blackmail and drug trafficking - amongst other nefarious deeds. Their leader, Álvaro Neves and right-hand man, Milo Rego are men to be feared - and will not hesitate to deploy swift and violent action against any perceived enemy or obstructionist threat.

Check out the file including a selection of brand new Max Payne 3 screenshots here.

Fan-Made Max Payne 3 GIFs (Found at NeoGAF)

Hats off to the group of Max Payne fans over at NeoGAF who've been busy at work creating these action-oriented animated GIFs culled from shots taken from the Max Payne 3 video content released to date.
While of course a bit choppy as animated GIFs tend to be, they're a nice little distillation of some short-burst, explosive moments and details you may have missed. Here's just a few.

The pistol whip is another close quarters melee strike, setting up the kill. (Uploaded by JaseC.)

Kicking an enemy is just one of a few melee attacks, and is mapped to the shoot button so you have control during the finishing shot. (Uploaded by Social Club's own keltickennedy.)

Reloading while holding two weapons is a natural animation for Max, as an empty magazine falls the ground. (Uploaded by Natty1.)

Seamless transitions from cutscenes to gameplay builds up tension, as you never know when the cutscene will end and the action will begin... (Uploaded by Sethos.)

This week's addition to our Max Payne 3 Original Artwork series is 'Reckoning' - featuring Max in a very momentary state of contemplation under the dark skies of São Paulo, following a ransom exchange gone wrong at the soccer stadium.

This bloodied and battered successor to 'Transfer Deadline' can be had in the full range of desktop and mobile wallpaper sizes, backgrounds, buddy icons, avatars and even a Facebook Cover version - all at the Rockstar Games Downloads section or at the Max Payne 3 official site.
